The Rising Cost of Mental Wellness
Over the past decade, awareness of mental health in Australia has increased dramatically. But along with that, the cost of professional help has also soared. Visiting a clinical psychologist in Australia without subsidies can cost $200 to $300 per session. For someone struggling with depression or anxiety, regular sessions are essential, but the cost can become a new source of stress.
This is where health insurance plays an increasingly vital role. Historically, Australian health insurance focused on the physical: bones, hearts, and organs. But in 2026, a good policy must be seen as a tool for financial protection for the “whole self,” including the mind.
Extras Cover: Psychology and Counselling
Financial protection for mental health usually comes not from hospital cover but from Extras Cover (or Ancillary Cover). Extras policies cover services outside the hospital, such as dental, optical, physiotherapy, and most importantly, psychology.
However, there is a major trap to watch out for: Annual Limits. Most Extras policies have an annual limit, for example $450 or $800 per year for psychologist visits. If a session costs $200 and insurance covers 70%, you will exhaust that annual limit in just 3-4 sessions.
This means that even with insurance, you may still face significant out-of-pocket costs if you need long-term therapy. To overcome this, many smart consumers now combine their insurance with a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from a GP. Through an MHTP, Medicare subsidises up to 10 sessions per year. The best financial strategy is to use Medicare sessions first, then switch to your Extras Cover after the government subsidy runs out, or vice versa, depending on your policy structure.
Hospital Psychiatry and Rehab
For more severe cases requiring admission to a psychiatric facility, hospital cover is needed. But note that some “Basic” or “Bronze” policies may have limited coverage for psychiatric care.
Gold policies typically cover inpatient psychiatric care, but often with limits such as “maximum 30 days per year.” The cost of a private mental health facility can be extremely high, exceeding $1,000 per day. Knowing your policy limits can prevent financially devastating surprises when you are at your most vulnerable.
Resources like Beyond Blue provide data and support on the prevalence of mental health issues in Australia, underscoring why having a financial safety net for this is just as important as insurance for a heart attack. Investing in a policy that covers mental health is the most basic form of financial self-care in the modern era.
